Notepad Birthday Cake

Notepad Cake

This cake is a little more personal than some of my other cakes.  It was made to celebrate a special birthday for a special mom.  This mom is very organized and is always sitting at her kitchen table, eating her Chobani greek yogurt with her favorite spoon, and writing lists on her favorite pad with her favorite pen. Her kids thought it would be perfect to capture that in cake.

Gumpaste Chobani Yogurt Container

This was my favorite part of the cake.  I made an edible Chobani yogurt container.  I used an empty container to shape the gumpaste into the right shape.  I used a separate piece of gumpaste for the lid, allowed it to dry on a curve and then attached it to the container.  I hand painted the logo onto the container.

Fondant Pen

Here is a closeup of her favorite pen.  I modeled it out of black fondant.

Notes on Notepad

Here is a better look of the actual list.  I used food coloring markers to make the blue and red lines of the notepad paper.  Then I used a black food coloring marker to write out the actual list.  The actual list was given to me by the daughter, she wanted me to write it out exactly like this.  Happy Birthday!

Pirate Birthday Cake

Pirate Birthday CakeThis was a really fun cake to design and create.  My son loves the show “Jake and the Neverland Pirates” so I was familiar with the theme when asked to make the cake.  I have been seeing this wave technique around for a few months now, and it was the perfect time to try it!  The bottom tier was made to look like waves using an ombre wave technique.  I bordered the cake with brown sugar to represent sand.  And then scattered fondant gold doubloons all around the cake.

Treasure Map CakeThe top tier was hand painted using gel food color.  I painted it to look like a treasure map.  The birthday message was painted in the font similar to the font used in the television show.

Jake and the Neverland PiratesI made the Jake character out of fondant.  I cut each color out and pieced it together like a puzzle.  I made the palm tree out of fondant as well.  When I was arranging the top of the cake, it was looking a little bare, so I added an airbrushed sun behind Jake to make him really pop.  I love how this cake turned out, Happy Birthday Harry!

Teacher Retirement Cake

Teacher Retirement CakeI thought this would be a fun cake to share around back to school season.  This cake was made for a special teacher to celebrate her retirement.  Her husband wanted to surprise her with a great cake, so he called me and gave me freedom to design whatever I wanted.  At first I was going to design a pretty cake with flowers and sparkle, but I quickly changed my mind.  It had to be a cake celebrating her great career!

Fondant Apple and Chalkboard Cake BoardI covered the cake board in a thin layer of black royal icing.  Once it was dry, I painted “Congrats Judy” with white gel food color to look like a chalk board.  I included a piece of fondant chalk nearby.  The apple is made from rice crispy treats covered in red fondant.

Marble Notebook CakeI love making book cakes now, it’s my new obsession!  My first book cake was made for a graduation, and I couldn’t wait to make another one.  I made the bottom tier a simple green to compliment the apple.  I called that one “lesson plan”.  The top tier is meant to look like a marble notebook.  I used a clean and new kitchen sponge dipped in black gel food coloring to dab on the marbled design.  I really like how it turned out!

school supply cakeA school themed cake would not be complete without a ruler, number 2 pencil, rubber eraser, and wide ruled paper.  I gave Judy an A+, congratulations on your retirement!
