Party Hat Birthday Cake

Party Hat Birthday Cake

This was a fun birthday cake that I made for Itai’s 3rd birthday party.  The design was inspired by the Pink Cake Box.  This cake was so much fun to make!  I actually used a tear drop gum paste cutter that I found in my Wilton flower making kit.  It was so much easier to use a cutter than cutting out a million balloons by hand.  I used a clay extruder to make the black strings for the balloons on the bottom tier.  The party hat itself was made out of rice crispy treats.  Yum!

This cake is so cute and fun!  It matched Itai’s party perfectly.  Happy 3rd Birthday!

Charlie Turns Two With The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake

My son, Charlie, turned 2 years old!  When he turned 1 year old I had a really tough time designing his cake.  He had no interests and I couldn’t decide on a theme.  At the last minute I threw something together and was not too pleased with the results.  I’m even slightly embarrassed to remind you as to what that cake looked like, but since you may be curious…you can find it here.  Even though I wasn’t thrilled with Charlie’s cake, he still turned one and my family had fun celebrating with us.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake CollageThis year I had an amazing idea!  Charlie loves Eric Carle’s classic book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”.  It’s also one of my favorite books so maybe I was really making this cake for myself.  Either way, it’s such a cute book with such recognizable images.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cake Views

If you know the book, you will notice how true to the book I kept the design.  The top tier has the fruit the caterpillar eats on Monday through Friday: one apple, two pears, three plums, four strawberries, and five oranges.  The bottom tier has all the food that the caterpillar eats on Sunday.  My favorite part of the cake is the nice green leaf that the caterpillar eats on Sunday.

Happy 2nd Birthday!

Charlie loved his cake!  Happy 2nd Birthday!

Sugar Hearts Birthday Cake

Purple Ombre Sugar Hearts

This is my first Pinterest cake!  What I mean is that I saw a cake like this on Pinterest and was waiting anxiously to make it.  Then I was asked to make a 21st birthday cake and the only requirement was that it should be purple.  The rest of the design was up to me.

Purple Sugar Hearts

The hearts are basically just colored sugar cubes, they were really easy to make.  I used this tutorial to make the ombre sugar hearts.  Now usually I make a million decorations when preparing for a project.  For some reason, this time I didn’t.  I don’t even know why; the sugar hearts are so easy to make!  I set up the cake and then started to lay out my design.  I realized that I needed to make some white sugar hearts to make the pattern work.  I got so nervous because I only had a few hours before the cake needed to be completed and was worried that the white ones wouldn’t be dry enough, but baking the sugar for 5 minutes in the oven really hardens them!  I was saved, phew.

Fondant Key

For the top of the cake I made a key out of fondant.  Then I painted it with antique gold luster dust.  There is a tradition around the world to present a child the key to the home on their 21st birthday.  It’s a symbol of the child entering into adulthood and therefore I was asked to incorporate a key.  I love how it turned out, it’s so elegant and girly.  Happy 21st birthday!
