Gender Reveal Cake

Gender Reveal Cake

There is a growing trend with expectant moms and dads to find out the baby’s gender with a party.  The parents receive news of the baby’s gender in a sealed envelope and then use creative ways to share the surprise.  My favorite way is using cake of course!  But I haven’t had the chance to make a gender reveal cake until recently.

pink gender reveal cake

It’s a girl!  I baked a vanilla cake and colored it pink.  Then I covered the entire cake in white buttercream roses.  I tried so hard to make sure no crumbs were peeking out, that would have ruined the surprise!  I added a pink and blue fondant bunting to the top of the cake to add to the suspense.  This was so much fun to be a part of, and I’m so glad I was sent this picture after the cake was cut!

Minion Birthday Cake

Minion Birthday Cake

I had so much fun making this cake, it is just so darn cute!  I was asked to make Aroni a minion birthday cake.  He wanted the minion to be playing hockey.  His mom thought it might look a little silly since minions don’t really play hockey, but I made it totally work!  Since this was my first minion cake, I just had to wing it.  I stacked a bunch of 6 inch cakes (maybe 5) and one rounded cake for the top.  The rounded cake was baked in a small glass bowl that I greased and floured well.  The shape is very simple, all the details really bring the cake to life!

Minion Eye Goggle

I decided to go with the minion with one eye to give the cake more impact.  My set of round cutters really helped me out here.  I cut out the white part of the eyeball then cut two tiny rounded strips of yellow for the top and bottom edges for interest.  I cut out a little piece of brown for the iris, colored it with black lines using a food coloring marker.  I added a black dot of fondant in the center and a tiny white dot as the eye glimmer that bring all cartoon characters to life.  The goggle was made with gray fondant that I painted with silver luster dust.  I made the buttons on the overalls using a fondant button mold, and the stitches in the overalls using my stitching roller tool.

Minion Hair

To make the hair, I wrapped half of a toothpick in black fondant and curved the edge.  I made a bunch of strands of hair in different heights.  Then I let it dry to keep the proper shape.  Once the fondant was dry, I pushed the toothpicks into the cake wherever I thought they should be.  Happy Birthday Aroni!

Frozen Birthday Cake

Frozen Birthday Cake

I have to admit that when I was asked to make this cake a few months ago, I hadn’t yet seen the movie.  I had obviously heard of it, but with a 3 year old son, there was no rush to see Disney’s Frozen.  After some careful research, I realized that the animation in this movie was amazing and replicating the characters would be extremely time consuming and difficult.  I decided to cut my losses and wanted to buy some plastic cake toppers.  But with the popularity of the movie, every Anna and Elsa cake topper was sold out or back-ordered.  I was getting nervous.  After scouring the internet for way too much time, I came across another Frozen cake made using toy figurines that came in a fancy book.  I quickly placed my order for the book, and decided I would figure out how to attach the toys to the cake once they showed up.

Olaf, Anna, and Elsa

The toys were easier to attach than I had thought.  I used tons of royal icing to attach the cute figurines to the top of the cake.  The book even came with two frozen trees!

Frozen Cake Mountain Backdrop

Here you can see the mountains I made out of gum paste as a scene backdrop.  I made a few different free form mountains in white and allowed them to dry.  While they were drying out I airbrushed some in different shades of blue.  Then i attached them to lollipop sticks and placed them towards the back of the cake.

Frozen Collage

I stamped snowflakes into the white fondant that covered the cake board.  The lettering was cut out of gum paste and airbrushed to match the Frozen logo.  Cut out snowflakes and the number 3 finished the cake.  Happy 3rd Birthday Libby!

Here is another Frozen cake I’ve done-it’s a very different look!
